The owners asked us to brighten the long, narrow strip facing the street. Their stone house is stately, and from the street it can look severe, so we planted trees with light foliage and layered seasonal flowers along it. Upstairs, in a space open to the sky, we laid an ipe deck and rebuilt a water feature where fish had not survived.

Slender trees along the side of the house mark the turning of the seasons.

Before the gate, an aohada (Ilex macropoda): white flowers in early summer, red berries in autumn, then yellow leaves. Hostas and variegated star jasmine at its foot.

The tiled floor upstairs held the summer heat and was too hot for bare feet. The owners wanted somewhere their children could play barefoot, so we laid a deck of ipe, a wood used on harbor quays that lasts for decades even by the water.

The fish here kept dying. We found the earlier pond had been built without leaching the alkali from the concrete, so we installed a fountain with a filtration system, and beside it a waterfall of stacked stone.
