The owners wanted the gate to feel like arriving at a tropical resort hotel: solid and substantial. For the garden beyond it, they wanted the brightness of the resort itself. On one property in Kamagaya, we built the gate, walls and garage, a garden of winding paths, and parking for eight cars, from the groundwork to the planting.

The walls are reinforced concrete faced with natural stone, laid in thick, slightly offset courses that cast deep shadows. A tiled roof gives the gate its dignity.

Tiles crown the stone wall as well, and beside the gatepost stands a slender multi-stemmed tree.

Before the gate, a planting bed edged in the same granite as the paving. Herbs and pansies at the foot of a natsuhaze, a shrub loved for its autumn color.

The garage door is natural larch, electric, opening upward and folding away along the ceiling.

Parking for eight cars on what had been a field. The earthworks and the asphalt and concrete paving were all done by our own crew, under a carport built to bear the weight of snow.

Instead of running straight, the path curves gently across the grounds, so the garden reveals itself one view at a time.
