The owners asked for generous parking and a garden that would need little weeding. We turned the garden into a wood deck and proposed an exterior that ties the carport and the approach to the front door together.

The carport covers three cars and is a suspended type, held by two posts at the back. With no posts at the front, cars move in and out easily and doors open freely. Though there are only two posts, they are set deep in the ground, so the structure stands up to heavy snow.

Large-format tiles pave the approach from the nameplate to the front door, with a further gate and mailbox beyond. A pergola over the approach carries climbing plants, and behind the nameplate we planted a Siebold's maple, which turns a vivid red in autumn.

After treating the ground against weeds, we covered the whole garden with an ipe deck. Where hot air blew in from a neighbor's exhaust pipe, we added a fence of translucent acrylic panels that does not block the sun.
